2010 Garden Journal - October

clematis in bloom in OctoberThe fall has been fairly mild so far this year with no surprise early frosts. That has meant for an extended period of blooms in the garden. Many of my roses are still blooming, the summer spireas continue to rebloom and even my Clematis Polish Spirit is reblooming.

Oct 17 - picked the last green beans from the garden. Still picking carrots and beets. The deer are eating the swiss chard and beet tops as they are looking further for food as the winter sets in.

Oct 17 - planted garlic bulbs picked up at the Stratford Garlic Festival in September.

As I noted earlier, it was a mild fall, with an average maximum temperature of 14.5C, a little warmer than the norm of 13.8C. What was interesting the steadiness of the temperatures. We did not have any days below freezing until the very last day of October when the temperature feel to -1.7C.

We received a total of 97.6mm of rain in September compared to a expected normal rainfall of 71.6mm.
