2010 Garden Journal - March
March is all about planning. While the weather is still cold outside, the days are getting longer and we are tickled by the odd warm day. My garden activities in March consist primarily of planning our vegetable garden layout, finalizing my planting schedule and starting a few seeds indoors.
Week 2 and 3 - worked on my 2010 vegetable garden layout.
Week 3 - finalized my 2010 vegetable garden planting schedule.
March 20 - returned from March break and found Hamamelis Westerstede blooming. It was still blooming on Easter Weekend (April 4).
March 22 - started 8 kholrabi, 16 red zeppelin onions in peat pellets. Seven of eight kholrabi sprounted by March 25. By March 27 I had 5 strong sprouts remaining.
March 27 - Kholrabi sprouts were 1 inch high. Some onions have started to sprout.
March 27 - planted Mesclun mix indoors from leftover 2009 seed. Started peppers indoors.
Weather wise March was warmer than normal. The normal maximum temperature in March averages 4C in our area while the average in 2010 was 7.9C. While total precipitation was 103.2mm in March 2010, this almost all came during 4 rainy days from March 12 to 15. Most of our precipitation came in the form of rain with very little snowfall in March 2010. In fact we did not see snow on the ground beyond the first week of March which is unusual.
