Carolinian Woodland Garden Design Plan
In late fall 2007 I added a few large trees to an area that was otherwise lawn with a view to reducing the amount of bare lawn I was maintaining as well as creating a second woodland garden. With some existing evergreens and a backdrop of existing old oaks and black cherry trees this area will hopefully evolve into a beautiful wooded garden.
In 2008 I added more trees and shrubs, focusing more on native Ontario species. I have been increasing my knowledge and experience with native trees and shrubs over the last two years or so and now almost all of my new plantings are natives. My next effort will be to research and learn more about native woodland perennials as I fill in the woodland floor. While I will not likely restrict my plant choices to native species, I have truly fell in love with the variety and natural look and feel that native plants seem to provide in my garden.
